Wildlife

Wildlife is looked after at no charge. One of the privileges of living in the hills is the wide variety of wildlife. At Eastern Hills Veterinary Centre we are happy to take in wildlife and try to treat them so they can be released. We work closely with wildlife carers such as Kanyana Rehabilitation Centre, Chidlow Marsupial Hospital and Beverley Wildlife Rescue. They do the hard work rehabilitating the birds and animals. So donations are very welcome.

If you follow the link to Kanyana, advice can be found on how to care for sick and injured wildlife. www.kanyanawildlife.org.au

Some general advice:

Most important is to ensure your own safety. If you are on a road, make sure nobody is going to run into you.

Remember wildlife can be dangerous. For example an injured adult kangaroo or emu can give a nasty kick, so approach with caution. Some birds have very strong or sharp beaks. Protect your eyes and fingers .If in doubt call for help.

If the kangaroo, possum or bandicoot is dead check pouches for young.

To pick up an injured bird or animal, a blanket or towel to wrap over a possum or large parrot works well. Bob tails are ferocious looking but harmless. They can be safely picked up.

What then?

Keep them in a quiet and warm place. Resist the urge to feed them. If they are cold they will need an external heat source. Body heat, if safe or a box with a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel is good. Then call for advice.

Very young birds or animals need frequent feeding of the right food. The wrong diet can cause gastro and kill them very quickly.
